My Story
There are moments in life that quietly shape you long before you realize their significance. I never imagined that one day I would have a conversation like this, reflecting over three decades in banking and leadership.Â
About 35 years ago, when I started my career, banking was the aspiration of many young Nigerians. It represented professionalism, respect, and purpose. But my fascination with banking began even earlier.Â
Years before I formally entered the profession, my father sent me to Allied Bank on a hot afternoon. I remember walking into the banking hall around 2 or 3 p.m., and what struck me immediately was the people. They looked refreshed, composed, almost angelic. Despite the heat and the time of day, they carried themselves with calm confidence. I was mesmerized.Â
At the time, I was in Class 3 in secondary school. Standing there, watching the bankers interact with customers, something clicked. Then a customer began to complain, and the branch manager stepped in. The way he handled the situation with composure, clarity, and respect blew my mind.Â
Right there, I made two decisions as a young boy:Â
First, I would become a banker.Â
Second, I wouldn’t stop there – I would become a CEO.Â
Those early impressions stayed with me.Â
When I eventually joined Union Bank, the institution reinforced values that became non-negotiable for me: discipline, integrity, trust, accountability, stewardship, and long-term value creation. These were not slogans; they were living principles.Â
Another formative experience was my NYSC service year in Igoko, Benue State. As a corps member working in a bank, I noticed something powerful. When we went to buy things in the community, we didn’t need cash. People were happy to give us goods because they trusted that they would collect their money from the bank on a specific day – usually the 20th of the month. All we gave them was a piece of paper.Â
That level of trust deeply affected me. Bankers were respected in the streets, in the community, and in people’s homes. That experience shaped my philosophy early on: trust is the currency of leadership.Â
